It's important to replace the bulb every pond season, even if it still appears to be glowing. Though the bulb may continue to emit light, its effectiveness in killing algae diminishes over time. Replacement bulbs are available in four sizes to accommodate a wide range of pond sizes: 5 watts for ponds up to 660 gallons, 9 watts for up to 1,800 gallons, 18 watts for up to 4,400 gallons, and 36 watts for up to 8,800 gallons.
The TetraPond GreenFree UV Clarifier (sold separately) works by using ultraviolet light to destroy suspended green algae. As the algae are pumped into the clarifier, they are exposed to the UV light, which disrupts their reproductive abilities.
